Pawan Kalyan's Interview

Pavan Kalyan is on a path to self-discovery. While most stars enjoy the adulation, this adored hero is content to introspect away from the limelight. The actor is also a man who is driven by the strength of his convictions.

We managed to corner the star on the sets of his next film, Bangaram, at Rama Naidu Studios. As his leading lady, Reema Sen, practiced her dance steps, Pavan Kalyan faced and fielded with grace, an unwelcome volley of questions.

Why I don’t enjoy this:

Because interviews pose too many questions that I have no answer for. People are curious and if I don’t explain myself, I will be misunderstood. However, when I do explain I don’t fare much better. Either way, my views are misinterpreted and this brings me down sometimes.

“Irresponsible crank”:

I’ve heard that one before. If only people knew how much I try to be responsible. For example, I used to feast on whatever I liked but recently I discovered dark circles under my eyes. So I avoid oily food and have given up eating dinner altogether. It’s not easy to fight the rumble of your empty stomach especially when there’s a sumptuous spread before you. But my audience deserves and expects a better look from me every time; I feel responsible to conform.

Johnny was a mistake:

After that debacle, people couldn’t forgive me for letting them down so badly. I was experimenting when I should have been entertaining. But what interested me about the movie was the character that would not be provoked. In fact, that is me in real life too. I work hard at not getting provoked. If there’s strong criticism coming my way, I try to assimilate it and improve.

I’m like this only:

I don’t see why producers or distributors should feel cheated if a film of mine does not do well at the box-office. It’s a risk that goes with the territory. As an actor, I have evolved on my own. I have never made promises or raised false hopes. And I have never asked anyone to buy my films. So, if there are expectations, there are also several personal reasons behind them. I make a sincere effort with everything I do; I give my best to each project. What’s mystifying is these people who criticise me have suffered no losses on my account.

My freedom is precious:

The other day I wanted to buy some plants and drove straight to Kadiam near Rajahmundry. I spent a lot of time at the nursery there and shopped for our farmhouse. When fans got to know of this, they arrived there in droves. I wasn’t surprised but I just did what I wanted to do. I go where I want to go. Recently I spent time just working on the farm for two months and realised, in the process, that I don’t have the stamina it takes to toil in the mud despite my daily two-and-a-half-hour fitness regime.

Will die for a cause:

It would be satisfying to give up my life for something that I strongly believe in. In any case, I have darts flying at me everyday because I am who I am. If I can deal with the emotional attacks, the physical won’t a big deal.

Get the message?

If you’ve watched my films, you will notice they carry no indecency or vulgarity. And I always manage to convey that I am against eve-teasing in all forms. I am reminded of an incident that happened soon after I became an actor. I saw a couple of boys hassling a girl. I walked up to them and gave the hooligans what they deserved.

Martial arts man:

Recently, I got a trainer from Hong Kong and spent a few weeks updating my technique. I first trained in martial arts when I entered the film industry but I see the need to perfect the skill further.

Miles to go:

People expect different things from me but I still don’t know what I want for myself. Is being an actor everything I want from life? I don’t know yet.

Pawan Kalyan Profile

Pawan Kalyan started his career as a hero with a film 'Akkada Ammai Ikkada Abbai'. This film did not do well in spite of having all the ingredients of commercial cinema. This film had Supriya, the grand daughter of Akkineni Nageswara Rao as the heroine and E.V.V. Satyanarayana directed this film.

Pawan Kalyan had to take a brief break after the release of his first film, as there were no offers for him. His second film is 'Gokulamlo Seeta', which is a family oriented film directed by Muthyala Subbaiah. This film did well due to the nice story line. Raasi did act as heroine in this film. Pawan Kalyan could manage a decent hit with 'Gokulamlo Seeta'.

Pawan Kalyan's third film was Supergood film's 'Suswagatam'. This film was released on 1st of January. It is a youth oriented film with a message in it. Suswagatam welcomes the change in youth by not going after the girls. With this film Pawan could attract youth towards him, as it's a college love story. Suswagatam has earned the tag of salable hero to Pawan Kalyan. Bheemineni Sreenivasa Rao directed this film.

Toliprema, released as the fourth film from Pawan Kalyan shocked the Industry with its stupendous box-office collections. Directed by a debutante Karunakaran, this film depicts the life of college student who falls in unconditional love with a cute girl. This film tickled everybody's heart with its sensitive portrayal of love. Keerty Reddy is the heroine in this film. Pawan Kalyan did amass a huge youth following with this film. Especially in Nizam, most of the college going youth used to identify themselves with Pawan Kalyan.

The next logical film followed was Tammudu. If Toliprema shown the world what Pawan Kalyan can do with his good judgement of directors, this film shown him as the new avatar for the box office sensation. Another debutante PA Arun Prasad directed this film. This film introduced two heroines to Telugu cinema. They are Preety Zingyani and Dr. Aditi. This film is not as enterprising as Toliprema. But, due to commercial elements in this film, it has become one the biggest blockbusters of the year 1999. Ramana Gogula's voice and music gave a new facet to Pawan's magic. This film made the buyers go bonkers.

His next film 'Badri' was sold for an astronomical amount of 11 crores. Released on 20th of April, Badri started off with a flop talk. Another debutante Poori Jagannath directed this film. Two heroines, Amisha Patel and Renuka Desai were introduced to Telugu Cinema with this film. But it went on to become another blockbuster of the year showing the supremacy Pawan Kalyan holds on the box-office. This film is a one-man show by Pawan Kalyan. It was greatly appreciated by the masses of Telugu Cinema.

Pawan's latest block buster Kushi did rewrite the annals of Telugu film Box office in the most of the areas. The slick direction by SJ Surya, the charms of Bhumika Chawla and the mellifluous music by Mani Sharma added to the Pawan Kalyan's Charisma. This film has collecte more than 25 crores in AP alone.

After Kushi, Pawan Kalyan was in Japan for a brief period learing Akido martial art. That's for his debut directoral film Jhonny. The film had Renu Desai as lead actress. The film didnot do great at the boxoffice but the movie has touching moments and became a canvas of Pawan's directoral skills.
Gudumba Shankar released in 2004. This film has Pawan Kalyan written all over it. Stunts and songs are conceptualized by Pawan Kalyan. He also got the credits for screenplay. The film is a good family entertainer. However that was not what his fans were expecting. The film did average business at the boxoffice.
Vyjayanthi Films released Balu in 2005. This film is directed by Karunakaran who directed Tholi Prema. AM Ratnam is now producing Bangaram, which is in full swing. Following that Pawan Kalyan will act in his own direction.
Pawan Kalyan also composed stunts for Chiranjeevi's Daddy. A unique profile - In addition to his expertise in martial arts and fight sequences, he is a talented actor, director and a singer, yet a down-to-earth person. That is Powerstar Pawan Kalyan.
